Dr. Flavia Schlegel Visited China Water & Power Press

Dr. Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), visited China Water & Power Press (CWPP) on 17 May, 2016.

This was the first time for CWPP to receive high-level officials from UNESCO. President Xinhua Tang, Vice President Dongming Chen, and Vice President Zhongfeng Li met with Dr. Flavia Schlegel, and had in-depth exchange of views on furthering cooperation under the framework of the MoU on cooperation in the domain of water and culture between UNESCO and CWPP.


President Tang expressed his warm welcome towards Flavia Schlegel, and extended sincere thanks to the Sector of Natural Sciences and the Beijing Office of UNESCO. He suggested the two sides enhance pragmatic cooperation on the launching of International Water Culture Center and International Water Culture Forum, research on global water heritage, collection of water-themed pictures, paintings and videos, and compiling and publishing book series of international water culture and global river civilization. At the same time, President Tang briefly introduced the history and development of CWPP and its recent major programs in water and culture.


Dr. Flavia Schlegel appreciated CWPP’s support to the launch ceremony of UN World Water Development Report 2016, and CWPP’s contribution to knowledge dissemination and sharing in the water sector through translating and publishing the Chinese version of World Water Development Report (WWDR). She spoke highly of CWPP’s programs such as “China Water Governance Stories”, “Beautiful China Water” and water heritage research. She proposed deeper cooperation on co-publishing the book of the China Great Canal and the translating of the WWDR, and gave specific advice on the collaboration of International Water Culture Center and International Water Culture Forum. Also, Dr. Flavia Schlegel congratulated on CWPP’s 60 anniversary and sent her best wishes to its future.


At the request of President Tang, the two sides discussed the possibility of publishing the Chinese version and the English version of WWDR simultaneously.


Vice President Li Zhongfeng briefed the progress of China’s Beautiful Rivers and Lakes, a picture book on China’s major rivers and lakes. Directors from departments of international cooperation, architecture and water culture, and popular publishing also attended the meeting.
